Fuel Filter Failed

I recently changed my fuel filter with a Micro-Gard from Oreilly's. I've always bought WIX. Well the one time I try to save a little money by going with the cheaper brand I run into a stinkin problem.

I was driving and I started to smell diesel in the cab (I had the A/C cranked). I pull over, pop the hood with the engine still running, and see diesel spewing out of the sensor on the bottom of the fuel filter. My father-in-law picked me up and we went to Oreilly's and I got a WIX this time. I put it on and I was good to go. Anybody else have problems going with cheaper brand parts?

Do you think I can take the failed filter back and ask for my money back? I had about 350 miles on it and I have the receipt? I don't know their policy on returns.

O reilies is a big chain parts store and has a pretty good reputation, and should have a friendly warranty return policy. I would definitely take it back. Remember, "Buy cheap, Get cheap"

I'm not trying to beat you up, but how much money were you trying to save protecting a $10,000 motor? How much time & money did you spent replaceing the cheap filter, getting a new one, wasted fuel, having to explain to father inlaw, ect, ect, ect. Please don't be penny wise and pound foolish. Get the best filters (and parts) money can buy, and get them from a local Cummins dealer, or buy them on line from one of our sponsers.

I'll never buy a used truck.

BTW, welcome to DTR!

You might want to check your fuel pressure or change the overflow valve. A failed OF valve can generate over 100 psi in the filter, enough to split open even a Fleetguard.

My Fleetguard fuel filter developed a crack in the weld between the can to the metal boss where the water sensor screws in. I guess it's not just a problem with "inferior" brands.
