gears/tire size/RPM/mileage
gears/tire size/RPM/mileage
Truck is in Sig. I am wanting to step down from the 33-12.50-16.5 set I have now. With 4.10:1 gears, what is the optimal tire size for mileage? I dont necessarily want a smaller tire but I do want to go with a 16" wheel and a much narrower tire. I do not do much off road driving so these big pavement grabbers are not needed and probably have something to do with front end wear. So I am wanting to know the best set up for my truck. Is a bigger tire with the lower gears better for mileage on the highway? How does all that work? Thanks for the info if you have any.
bigger tires
Lets look at this from what i know, bigger tires and lower gearing IE what i have offer better mileage on the highway yet more rolling resistance when you first get going. IN your situation if you want better mileage id say you raise your tire RPMS while keeping your RPMS at or below 2000, i ran 235s in my old ford f250 with a five speed and a 4.10 rear end, YANKING POWER to say the very least, but poor mileage, 60 mph at 2000 rpms, when i stepped up to 265,s just before I sold it, i was at 64 mph with 4.10 gearing. Hmm much better. The deeper gears are for take off, and for compensating for larger tires (least in my opinion) But they will limit your top speed much more drastically (depending on tire size) due to the engine runnin out of RPMS, i dont know what tire is efficient to be honest with you, But i have heard of many ppl runnin 35's with the 4.10s and gettin decent mileage..
There is a formula you can use, to get the answer to this to get the approximate ratio that you wanna run I dont know it off the top of my head,
but it is something, like old tire size/new tire size (in inches i think) x 4.10 in ur case and that should give you your approximate ratio
do not quote me on this, but i think the larger tires for the 410 gears are the way to go,
Try 295's they are tall like 33's just a bit narrower.. if i think thats what you want they should serve ur needs. Dr Evil runs those, pm him for more info, thanks

315s will put you at about 1900RPMs @ 65 MPH
i think that's what i'm going to go with to get better gas milage.
right now i get 17 in town and 14-15 on the freeway @~70
i've got Nv4500 and 4:10s

Well you say 315 will get me 20 mpg, what size 315 are you running 315/75 or 85/16? Also, will that 315 fit under stock suspension? How much bigger are 315's than the 33's I have now? I only get about 18 mpg with the 33's if my speedo is right but from the calculators I have used it isnt. At 70 MPH im turning 2250 RPM. The calculator says I should be running 78 MPH at that RPM with 4.10's and 33 inch tires. How much to get a speedo calibrated?
