front and rear wheel bearing packing

Can someone tell me if I need to pack my front and rear wheel bearings. I read some people do and some don't. I replaced a seal and two bearings on the drivers side rear and I did not pack the bearings. The rear is a Dana 80 and am not sure about the front, the label on the hood says Dana 6. I assume it is a Dana 60. If it is recommended to pack the bearings what shall I use? Thanks a lot Doug

The front bearings can only be packed on 2wd trucks, 4x4 have sealed bearings. The rear bearings run in gear oil and should be lubed with oil when reinstalling the axle; make sure the diff is right full of oil so it can run down the tube to keep the bearings lubed.

Technically I think its reccomended to pack the rears upon new installation. I never have in 30 years of wrenchin and had no issues. I would at least oil them. As mentioned be sure the rear diff is full. The fronts 4x4`s are sealed on everything after 93.

Full on a Dana 80 is 3/4" below the bottom of the fill hole.
Filling to the bottom of the hole causes the differential to run hot and also encourages seal leakage.

All right thanks for all the input. Changed the front passenger side seal, went through the four wheel drive actuator, does any one have any good tips on installing that seal? I used a piece of steel I hole sawed and some all-thread. Thanks again.
