forced air

I was wondering if anyone had tried to kinda "funnel or force" air into a stock box.......

I have the stock box with a K&N filter in it. I have Ranchhand bumpers on the front and back.....I know your thinkin what do bumpers have to do with air but let me run this by yall and see if anyone has attempted this.......

On the front of my bumper i have 2 rectangular holes, one on each side of the bumper (I think their so they can load unload the bumpers at the factory with a forklift)

Anyways on the passenger side of the truck I want to weld up a box behind the hole and have a circular outlet at the back of the "box" I was thinkin a 2 0r 3 inch outlet that I could run some tubing or something under the intercooler and snake it back up to the stock airbox....... I am plannin on cuttin or notching the wheel well liner and have this tubing come up into the stock box through a self made hole in the stock box.....thus forcing air into the box.........I am wondering if this would have any adverce affects on the turbo....or maybe blow the filter up to the top of the box thus letting unfiltered air into the engine?

I was also thinking I might want a TAG if I do try this..from what I've heard they are pretty nifty little devices but expensive for a piece of honeycomp i think I could fab up.....

Have I lost my mind or does anyone think this will work? I dont think it would have a effect at lower speeds but at cruising speeds (105+) hahaha i think it would be forcing a tremendous ammoun of air into the engine.......It cant be any crazier than a CONCRETE BEDLINER....

Seriously though sorry for such a long thread, any info appreciated.....Zack

The restriction would still be your air filter......why not save yourself alot of work and install a BHAF or a Scotty Air System

I thought of that too but even with those they are still "sucking" air arent they versus having air forced into them while driving also i would think the air inside the engine compartment would be hotter than air strait off the front of the truck. I am not trying to argue with you but i have thought about all the issues with different filter setups and was just thinking maybe this "ram air" thing would push an endless amount of air through the filter. correct me if im wrong please...please keep the replies coming though.....im seriously thinking about doing this.....

Think its time you looked at a Scotty.....they did allot of research for this system and found the best of the best for our trucks

http://www.wildcatdiesel.com/

Remember our trucks are turbo and not naturally aspirated engines so a ram air system other the cool air doesn' have allot of effect.....with the Scotty if yo cut the hole you get cool air

Just think of what would happen if you hit some standing water on the road that made its way up your "tube" .
Just somethin to think about

I knew someone who did what you're thinking of, it became a highly effective snow scoop. Also on a hot sunny day the temps near the blacktop can easily exceed 150°

The cowl location where the Scotty draws its air does force feed the filter box due to the aerodynamic design of the truck. It's the same reason you have vent air flowing without the fan on.

How 'bout those water injection systems?
That is where this would come into play.

Your in side of your fender is a high pressure source for air. Hence the big honking hole in it if you remove your stock box. It is kinda like you turbo system....you don’t need lots of high flow componets (IE: Headders, bigger air horn, turbo tubes) because the air is pressurized. Just like your fender, its blocked by lots of items (headlights, battery, bumper...) but air will find its way in. Yes you need to let enough in (Volume) but i think the cowl and the fender are good locations to pick up cooler air. Hence why all of the aftermarket air boxes use the fender (And cowl--Scotty if you drill the 4" hole) to pick up the cooler air. That should show you there is lots of pressure, just a restricted air box/intake tube getting in the way. Them factory engineers do kinda know what they are doing!
