Just bought a 98 2500 5spd with 212000 kms and don't know the history of fluid replacements. I want to replace the trany fluid and the differential fluid - what should I use for each one and how much fluid does each take? Have already changed the anti-freeze and oil. Should I also change the brake fluid?

I change the tranny fluid about every 50,000 miles. You're supposed to only use Castrol Syntorq in the transmission, but Amsoil has developed an alternative with the same characteristics. It's expensive stuff - the best price is $54 gal. from Standard Transmission, but the last time I bought from them the Castrol was backordered and they sent me Amsoil. The trans. will take a little over 3.5 qt if you put it in thru the fill plug but if you take the shifter off and pour it in from the top it can take four quarts.

I used Amsoil 75w90 (IIRC) in the rear end but don't remember how much it took. You may or may not need to add some friction modifier (available from the Chrysler dealer). Don't put any in unless it needs it. You can tell if it needs it by going to a parking lot and do a series of tight figure 8s. If you feel or hear the rear end chattering in the turns then add some modifier but drive it a while to make sure the modifer is thoroughly mixed with the diff. fluid before testing it again.
