Fixed starting problem
Fixed starting problem
Hey, new here so dont know if this has been covered but I had a starting prob with my 98 2500 diesel for a long time. Would start then die. Would run fine after that but second start was hard. Went on a trip and suddenly it wouldnt start at all.
Went to adjust the fuel shutoff and discovered the rubber boot had come apart and was stuck in the spring it covers. Cleaned it all out and it starts great.
Hope that helps someone.

Just for your bookmarks, Foster has the boots and solenoid plus starter parts.

Without the boot the solenoid eventually gunks up and either doesn't lift all the way or jambs up.
You can use a section of 1.75" bicycle inner tube and two cable ties instead of the expensive boot. $5 tube will make 20 boots.
Trick to working on the solenoid is to turn the key on and lift it up before you remove it. That way it doesn't come flying apart until you can get your hands around it good.

Congratulations Kevin, and thanks for letting us know what the fix was.
That's going to help some of us newbies.
So would it start right up the first time and run fine until you tried to start it again, or was the first startup also hard?
Did this happen after letting it sit overnight, or did that make any difference?
Sorry to sound so nosy, but I'd like to get the details on symptoms. This is going to be another of my bookmarks.
