Filling a NV4500

I've heard the oil capacity of the NV4500 is 4 quarts, but last time I changed it I couldn't even fit 3.5 quarts in.

My technique was starting with a warm truck and draining out of the lowest PTO bolt hole on the passenger side, then filling through the upper fill hole.

Am I missing something?

I filled mine by removing the shifter and pouring it in through there. I'm pretty sure I got all 4 quarts in that way.

ya gota remove the PTO cover to get it all out there is at least half a quart left in there . I use my fingers to scoop as much out as I can then whipe out rest with rag. I use a regular gear oil bottle with pointed spout to refill through fill hole , just gotta bend the bottle a little and park truck on side of hill to get the extra Qt in.

I don't know that I got all 4 qts. I just filled until it came out the fill hole and plugged it.

I could only get about 3.5 in mine. Take the shifter out and dump it through the top, be faster than doing it throught he fill hole in the side.

If you fill it from the top make sure it's not fuller than the bottom of the real fill plug.
Overfilling a tranny is recipe for an early death.
They are designed so that oil gets slung around by the moving components. When overfilled some parts are submerged and can't sling the oil where it's needed.
More is definitely not better.

Thanks fellas. I'll give caper's technique a try to get a little more old fluid out.
