Fifth gear nut $$$$$

How much would it cost to tighten the 5th gear nut on a 4x4. I mean, how much could I charge? What is the going rate? A local car dealer needs one done and me and a buddy want to see if it is worth it. Thanks John Mark Zavadil

a friend of mine paid $395 to get his fixed, sure wish i had known about it I'd have fixed it for 1/2 that, I fixed mine in my driveway, had a friend help me drop the transfer case, but had to put it back myself, that part was a job other than that it wasn't too bad. I'd do it for a couple hundred bucks, but then again i'm a poor boy so $200 might mean more to me than someone else?? just my $0.02

If you were doing your own, I would recommend you price in a replacement shaft and the proper nut, and allow 4 hours. If you are going to do one for a dealer, the flat rate manual has the procedure time allowance at about one hour less than it will really take just to change the nut, and the nut will not hold if you use OEM parts.

The real problem is that the OEM shaft does not have full length splines, and the gear will keep binding the shaft and pushing off any nut over time.

Do not give a firm quote, as once you open the unit you may find chipped gears or a galled shaft, or some monkey mechanic work that has beat the threads off the shaft, and find the nut is not the only problem.

Probably the best advice is to pass this by if you have not done this before, or if the dealer wants a firm cost.
