Explain the KDP jig please
When I bought my 97, the PO had said the KDP was 'killed' by using the jig. It's always had a leak, but got way worse this weekend. After looking around, I believe I have found a decent sized piece on the timing cover pushed out. I will have to get in there and clean it up good to know for sure, but I fear that the pin fell out. If that is the case, the new stepped cover will be going on to cure the problem.
From what I understand, the KDP jig is basically what it sounds like. The jig bolts to the engine and guides you to drill a hole in the timing cover right at the point where the KDP sits. You thread a bolt into the hole to keep the pin from sliding out. If it was fixed using the jig method, you should be able to see the bolt threaded into the hole in the side of the case.
But then I could be wrong, since I am over-valved.

I've seen the 'stepped' cover on a couple different sites. Instead of being straight through, the hole for the dowel pin has a step to it, the diameter decreases, so it doesn't allow the pin through.
Thanks for the pics, I will search everything out tomorrow. And after looking closer this evening with a good flashlight, I may have jumped to conclusions about the timing cover being pushed out. Will see in the morning.

That's exactly what another guy had told me, and to make **** sure I hadn't done so. I didn't get a chance to check it out, and am now on the road til mid July. I'm hoping/praying it was a mistake on my part. Buddy of mine is going to steam it off, and it's going to a local diesel mechanic to get some top end maintnance done while they check it out. I wish I had more time at home to take care of everything, I hate having to get the simple stuff done by shops like this. We will see early next week.
