Which engine/tranny/ transfer case to get?

I know I am crazy but it looks like I am not alone here. I am looking for a cummins td to put in my 74 chevy k20. I have been looking watching these forums for quite sometime and thats what made me decide on the cummins. I am of course not going to leave the engine stock when I get in it. My questions are as follows: What engine has the best power output for money invested? I've got it narrowed down between the 94-98 and 98-02 engines but dont know which. I also know I want a manual tranny but dont know which is the best reliability wise. I need a transfer case with the output on the passenger side so it will mate up to my old chevy's front axle. I was planning on dual stacks for exhaust. I would prefer to find the engine/tranny/transfer case all bolted together so I wouldnt have to bolt anything together since my knowledge isnt very big in the dodge category.
What kind of clutch linkage does the trannies have? Where can I pickup a complete engine/tranny/transfer case? I am not afraid to travel. Is there any dodge diesel salvages?
Thanks,
Mack

Did you look in the conversion forum these guys are the magicians, there is a guy in Ft. McMurray who put a 92 CTD into a 88 Chev crewcab. Took a look at it and noted some things that one would need to be addressed, the fellow had used the stock transfer case NP205 as it has the left side output. He had also used the automatic because it was easier to mate to the 205 tranfer case, these were used on 89-93 4x4s. There was more than standard angle on the engine in the engine compartment he said was to clear the firewall and he used the stock 454 radiator, I dont think it is going to be big enough and there are lots of 6.2L rads available which are crossflow and can be built with 5 core, fan shroud might be a custom fit. Some of these trucks came with Dana HD60F front diffs same as the Dodge, the rearends are corporate 14 bolt and will stand up but not 500HP/900lbs torque unless you are really careful. There was something about his oil pan he did but I did not have time to look real close, thought about doing same thing to my 78 K2500 and I have a 60F for it but wrong ratio. One can buy a 90-93 with everything in for less money and running, would still end up with rough old truck just better fuel milage. PK

I don't know if this would fit, but personal choice would be a '96' to early '98' 12 valve from a manual tranny truck. (Easiest and cheepest to add hp to.) You could use the NV4500 5 speed tranny that comes with that engine or better yet use a NV5600 6 speed. Don't know about transfer case.

Gene
