Transfer Case Transmission - Which Broke?
Had a bad day at the lake today and need advice:
While backing our RV up a fairly steep grade to a camp site, there was a loud bang and now the truck won't move. Putting it in park will hold the truck in place but drive or reverse in 2H, 4H or 4L on the transfer case only generates a kind of grinding noise but no motion from the truck.
Truck is a mildly modified (see signature) 97 Long Bed 4x4, with a three year old Goerend 47RE that has a triple disc converter and 10-15K miles on it. The RV is a 29' 5th wheel that I've weighed loaded at just under 10K. My first thought was the transfer case, but then I wasn't sure if that made sense due to park holding the truck. Then I wondered about the input shaft on the transmission or something else inside.
I'll call Dave on Monday to get his opinion but wondered what others thought was likely the cause?
Thanks for all advice and opinions.

This ended up being a failure of the ring gear that is splined to the intermediate shaft. According to Goerend this is an uncommon failure and they have only seen a few.
Great customer service by them and a more than fair repair charge. Still pretty expensive with shipping and R&R from a local shop. Glad to have the truck back on the road though and the tranny is working fine now.
