my stock 98' 12v has a bit of a problem. its never had much power from idle to 2000 rpm , always been sluggish. If Im in neutral and floor it, it stumbles until it gets up to 2200rpm or so then it clears up. wont do this while your driving though. Only getting between 13 and 15mpg (4x4). thoughts anyone?

What color smoke out tail pipe? When was the Fuel filter and air filter change last? Have you ever service the fuel heater strainer filter? Did you check fuel pressure and fuel shut down solenoid operation? Check for any oil in the turbo outlet, check for turbo compressor hitting housing. If equipped with EGR valve make sure it isn't stuck open. This would cause major drop in fuel mileage and lack of power. If that checks good, gear could have slipped on the injection pump. Check the pump timing.

 

Will check the turbo. Everything else seems ok. Kinda thought it might be the wastegate but it moves freely. Guess I'll have to remove it from a closer look. I think the smoke is blueish but will check that too.
