Some of the early 160 HP pumps had them. My 95 175HP pump did not. If they are in there you need to leave them in.

You for sure need the delivery valve socket.

Take an old oil pan drain plug to make an adapter for your dial indicator to screw into the pump. A little tip I found on here recently.

Yes, Cummins drain plug. Though a bit expensive (at least from Dodge), I replaced my original since the square hole was getting rounded a bit.

Look at kd460's pic:

As for the difficulty, ever change the timing chain and gears on an older American V-8? I think if you're up to an advanced "shade tree" level, you'll be good. Review the steps and judge for yourself:

Better yet, make a connection with another member in your area that has done it before.

I ordered my delivery valve socket from Piers (ET9166, $30.00):

it is much cheaper to use a 22mm bolt , 1.5mm thread pitch.

Something to consider. Since I had replaced my drain plug, I have the original just laying here waiting to be useful again. If yours is needing to be replaced, then you can look at the old one as being free!

If you do need to buy one, try checking with a Cummins parts dealer for the plug and new sealing ring/gasket. I bet they'll be cheaper than the Dodge boys were. There is no Cummins dealer in the small city in which I live, so I bit the bullet and went to the local "*******". I have since found a small diesel shop that has connections with a large regional Cummins dealer in Oklahoma City (~100 miles away). They can have parts here for me overnight at no additional charge!

For the dial inidicator, do you think the $15 Harbor Freight ones will do? Or is it important to have a higher quality one?
