The rh is shifted by hydraulics and a shift cable. The ecm controls the overdrive and lock up.On the re the computer controls the shifts and the overdrive and lock up.The cable is only used as a kick down cable.

I read here that one of the shafts (input or output) is also bigger on the RH. Not sure which one it was.

Sidewinder, I'm not sure about the shafts, but I do know that the overdrive case is different. Along with what dieselhawg said.

Yep. I have also heard that one(maybe both??) of the shafts in the RH are bigger/stronger than the ones in the RE... Dont know how true this is, but its fine with me..

overdrive part

will the overdrive section off a 47RH work on a 47RE unit?? i have been told it will and i have been told it won't. i just want to clear it up. as i just bought a overdrive section off a 2004 dodge 3500 4x4 with a 47RH trans and i have a 97 dodge 2500 4x4 with the 47RE trans.

the place i got it from said it will work on either from 96-06.

is this true or did he screw me over??

thanks

The 47RH only came in 94-95 trucks.

If the truck that the OD section came out of is an 04 then it will probably be a 48RE.

Later,
Wes

The 48RE came out in 03 although there were still some 47RE's out there in the SO trucks.

Here is how it breaks down.

94-95 47rh
96-early 03 47re
early-mid 03 and up 48re

Not exactly sure how late in 03 the used the 47re, but if it came out of an 04 it is a 48re no questions asked.

Nope. Not if it did actually come out of an 04. It "might" bolt up; but the electronics, shift points etc are way different.

First of all the throttle valve cable is more than passing gear. It contributes to first two shift points, controls line rise as well as part throttle and full throttle down shifts.
Look at the OD section you bought and see if it has two tubes that are slightly protruding past the gasket surface. If it does that is a RH. The tubes are feed tubes for the hydraulic governor. Also the OD section would be longer if RH. The OD section from a 48RE will bolt up to a '97 RE, but it is important to confirm the proper OD piston shim before installing.
