Did I get a good deal ? Tranny issue also

Going Saturday to pick up my latest purchase. 1998 Dodge Cummins 1 ton 4door dually 4x4 with 5sp manual. Truck has 226,000 miles but the body is in awesome shape with no rust showing anywhere, even the undercarriage looks clean. The only problem I noticed with it was that when I shift into 3rd gear the gear grinds a little bit. It will still go in gear easy enough but grinds alittle. doesn't matter what rpm i shift, still grinds. Im no expert but I would believe the syncro is going out. The truck has factory cd player and power everything with cloth interior. I know the NV4500's arent cheap. but what would u guess it would cost to rebulid ? I paid 7800.00 for the truck. I still think I got a great deal. Brand new tires all the way around this fall. Trucks never been modified in any way. Owner claims he gets 21 highway empty. What are your thoughts about what i paid for the truck? Your thoughts on the transmission ? Thanks in advance. Matt

Sounds like a decent deal.

My bet is the tranny went out due to the owner using non-specified fluid.
The NV4500 are very sensitive to incorrect fluids.
About $900 to rebuild with parts from here http://www.standardtransmission.com/dodge.html

You will also need about $100 of specialized tools.

It depends on what you need. I just had mine rebuilt at Standard Transmission for about $650 in parts. I think their exchange price is bumping $1800 plus shipping now, but they are the best in the industry IMO. If it still has the original transmission 226k is pretty impressive.

I Paid $1,900 for my 97 with 250K. Needed Trans cooler lines, Front brakes and a Crank Position Sensor. Body is good shape also.
