D70 Power-lock
installing a a power lock in a D70 does anybody have any pointers on how to get the backlash correct with the fewest amount of times in and out of the axle. i cant really go by the old carrier it spun a bearing and a few shims got eaten. ive been spoiled with the lighter chrysler axles having the adjustable cups on each side.
CJ360 start with what ever the shim pack was on the side that didnt get eaten and then slide shims in the side that spun the bearing, just remember that you will need to add about .005 of of an inch to add preload to the carrier bearings and be sure to check pinion pre load ( 15---30 inch lbs) tortional rotation. then when you get the backlash close check pinion depth at the same time as your gear tooth pattern with some compound, grease or white spray paint. and you can take a die grinder to the I.D and the O.D. OF SOME OLD BEARINGS AND RACES just so they slide on and off the bearing sufaces by hand. use them for set up bearings and then press on your new one with the same shims and do you final install. good luck!
the die grinder idea sounds REALLY good. hadnt thot of that one. i preffer the ease of a 8.25 or 9.25 set-up its just much easier. sucks that dana cudnt think of it. i always understood the rotation torque was to set the pinion bearings preload.....all my shims are fine. ring gear missing a tooth and bearings are shot so i gotta rebuild anyway. figure since the axle is out id go all out with the thing.
