Time to rebuild my d70 Power Trac LSD ~ Clutch pack order
Time to rebuild my d70 Power Trac LSD ~ Clutch pack order
I disassembled my power trac limited slip today. Not knowing what I would find, I started with the ring gear down and pulled the bolts. Then I lifted off the case. Knowing how worn the front end on this thing was, I was expecting to find the lsd clutches pretty worn. As I pulled each layer, I flipped it over and stacked it the same way it came off. This gave me two piles of parts. It kind of reminded me of the "Towers of Hanoi" game where you move one disc at a time trying to... But i digress. The stack on my left went from ring gear toward small end of case, and the stack on my left went from small side of case toward the ring gear.
This first pic is the right side stack with all the innards stacked on it.

This next pic is my left stack which it is currently the empty case with the ring gear still attached.

Now for my questions:
1) I was expecting to find more discs in the packs. This is what I found on the ring gear side. It looks like tabbed friction disc, slightly cupped steel disc, tabbed friction disc, slightly cupped steel disc, tabbed friction disc, then bug heavy cup (Ring gear to spiders, picture left to right). Question: Is this what I should find in here? The other side was identical.

2) In my research on the net, I found talk about changing the order of the discs to achieve tighter/harsher, almost spool-like characteristics or looser smoother drivability characteristics. I did not find this info for a d70 though. it was always for a 44, 60, or 80. Question: Does anybody know or have any recommendations for clutch pack order? I have not got my kit yet, so I am not sure if I will get the same combo.
I did not find any huge gnarlies in there. Both sides had the innermost friction discs looking like this below. The rest were skinny but had no gaps in the friction material. I am assuming this is simply just worn out. Any thoughts?

Thanks for your two cents.

the actual upgrade plates the military use are metal, they score and look rougher than your worn fibre plates, and lock better, but discharge more contamination, only replace with dana parts, aftermarket has some garbage that wont hold together behind these powertrains.
Right as I posted this thread, I got a call from a friend who has blown up a few of these on his p-pumped first gen pulling truck turning 38 inch dually mud terrains on the back. He is giving me a set of clutches that have only two pulls of the sled on them (well one and a half pulls anyway
) Anyhoo, he said he though the three friction discs and two steels were right. He also said that if you stack the steels together and the frictions together it works practically like an open and if you alternate them it will be much tighter.

hey-Hey!!!,
Looks good so far. When you get the new clutches, soak them in the friction modifier additive before you assemble them. It will take two bottles of the stinky goo to get smooth action out of them.
cheers,
Douglas
