my coolant temp sender is broke. i had my local auto parts store price one. they said it would be around $75-80. anyone know where i can get one cheaper. i have not pulled the sender out. from what i can feel/see, the plastic clip is broke and loose from sender.

 

I've never had to replace a coolant sensor, just oil pressure.
Pretty common for them to come unplugged when servicing the engine though.
If the coolant sensor is anything like the oil sender you're wasting your money on an autoparts generic one, it won't last.
Buy one from Cummins, it won't cost much more and could be less.

 

where could i get that from? just bought the truck, so i want to get it soon. it didn't work when i go the truck. i don't know what the engine temperature is , so i am not going to drive it until i get the sender.

Thats about the going price and I have seen them for more than 75 bucks ...the worst part in it's a real pain in the butt to install it ...If you got long arms you can reach up from the underside with a rachet and get that sucker out.
Make sure to drain some coolant ...I just did mine 2 weeks ago !

Here's a tip: Go to a case equipment dealer, and see what they want. Case uses cummins engines in all sorts of stuff, including 12v 5.9's. Get your engine serial number as someone else said, and give them a try. It might be cheaper, I dunno.

Ouch, try going to Cummins or an International Truck dealership I think I got mine for $43 or $35 I don't remember. Never go to the auto parts stores I have learned most of the time they don't have it. If they do it's at least double the price.

 

I had a problem with mine recently and it turned out something had cut the wire and left it hanging by the rubber insulation. Getting back there and splicing the wire was a pain but its possible. You can pull the connector up just high enough to get a meter on it to check for an open.
