Question Considering a swap 97-->98.?

Hello,

I would like the ext/cab sb 98 truck, 24 Valve/Auto. I have a 97 reg cab, 12valve, 5 speed that I have brought back from the dead and has proven to be reliable and strong.

My question is would it be an easy job to transfer my driveline over to the 98. That would be a nice rig imo. Any idea as to what issues would be involved with the 98 having the newer style computer?

Thanks everyone.

Well if you want it to be a factory like truck you would need a computer from a truck like mine.

If you don't mind a check engine light, I think most of the common sensors will carry over, like crank sensor for alternator charging/tach, AIT sensor for grid heater, etc. Would need to wire in shut down relay not sure how it's set up on a 24V.

Basically the truck you want to build was made by Chrysler once upon a time, so it won't be that bad to make it work. Depending on where you live it could be hard to get it all legal with an inspection sticker etc.

I made the mistake of going from a '98 12 valve reg cab 5 spd to a '01 auto and would have given anything to have just swapped in the 12 valve drive train. The electrical glitches were constant as far as the trans goes. And the auto was **** poor compared to the 5spd for towing. The quad cab with the 12 valve drive train is the perfect combo. i went back to a '98 12 valve and will live without the rear doors !

Hi Whiskers,

Yes 12V and std would be perfect in the 98 ext. cab but then I would have an extra 24V motor and auto tranny to unload, probably doable but alot of work/hassle I am thinking.

Kinda like the 3rd gen body style along with better handling/brakes would also be nice. I drive long distances and am wanting a camper but am concerned about how my 97 would stop and handle with 2K lbs or so on it's back. Only one way to tell I geuss.

Cheers.

My '98 stops and handles fine with my 2000lb lance. Plenty of power too. i haul it about 25k a year. leaving in a few days for a 3000 mile run to Denver then vegas and back. If you go up to about a '03 tp '05 you'd be pretty happy though. Only minor problems with those, but I don't like the full doors.

And I have some pics on here some where that shows you can put on 1 ton drums on the 2500 with minor works. More stopping power and you can run duals on a flat bed that way.

Hi whiskers, I think my truck has a dana 80 in the rear as it is 5 speed and has HD 8800 lb capacity. I put the GM wheel cylinders on right away when I bought the truck. I had to do a huge amount of work b4 I could insure it as the prior owner had an inspection notice on it that of course he forgot to mention to me, illegal to do but difficult to take action in small claims and takes years here in BC the courts are hugely inept. Gov't very slow to do anything but quick to grab the $$. rant rant.
