checking timing
checking timing
Is there a way to check the timing without going through the whole timing process? I had a powerstroke outrun me yesterday, so I think mabee there is something a little out of adjustment. Also, how much does a 4" exaust help the performance of the 12 valves? Thanks for any replies.
wat's out of adjustment is the fuel
Crack that AFC and bump the plate forward a few thou. You'll be all smiles. Jus make sure to mark the plate before you move it so the baseline setting is retained. You've got the gauges, now play around a little with the parts that you have stock. You'd be surprised at the power gains you can get just by bumping this and squeezing that. You have the 913 pump...a good place to start. And yes, free-er flowing exhaust helps tremendously!!
Due to the exacting tolerances ....10th's of a millimeter per 1/2* of timing, I am not absolutely sure, but I have to believe a dial indicator is the only way to know exactly where you are at....let alone make any adjustments accurately.

You don't have to go though the whole process to just check the timing but as said before you have to use a dial indicator. Just find TDC and measure the mm of rise at the #1 delivery valve and you'll know the timing.
The other method is to use a diesel timing light. With a light you just have to find TDC then apply timing tape that is calibrated to the diameter of your dampener to the dampener. Then you can check timing just like a gasser. It won't help you much with a light if you want to change the timing though.

Thanks for the replies guys. I need to figure out how to get into the AFC to start tunning. How do you get those screws out, and will there be parts and springs flying out when I get it off??
Also, where can I find a diesel timing light?
