changing rear ratio??

Thinking about changing rear end ratio from 4:10 to 3:73 or 3:54....on my 97 dually auto....just use it to haul my 3500 # slide in camper....trying to get rpms down closer to sweet spot. right now running 2250 at about 70mph. don't want to change tires... which gear set do you think would do the job best?? are the 3:54's to high? anybody want to swap? What says u?

The 3.54 is your only really easy option and should get you the speed combo you want. Finding a set of 3.54 Dana 80 gears should be fairly cheap as well.

3.73's will only give you a 200rpm drop and the 3.54's will give you a 500rpm drop

better off finding someone that will swap complete axles with ya. if you do it yourself youll need a new carrier along with ring and pinion to go from 4.10s to 3.54

Depends, stick or auto?

With the Auto, the 3.54's would rule, not sure about the handshaker.

I have a hand shaker and love the 3.55s. I see no need for 4.10s unless you are constantly towing HEAVY.

I changed from 4.10's to 3.54's and I love them, they are great. Well worth the 1600 dollars to get both my diffs changed out.

I changed my rear to a disc brake 354 and swapped the gears in the front . I really dont see any reason at all for 410`s.

My 98 5 speed had 4.10s. It was horrible. I priced switching to 3.54's, but with the 410's stock you need a new carrier for the D80 like mentioned earlier. Which is very spendy. I luckily found someone who wanted to trade axles, worked out well. 3.54's are definitely the way to go with the 5 speed.
