changing lifters in frame
changing lifters in frame
Well I ordered my cam from piers yesterday since I'm going to have to pull the stocker out during the KDP
repair. I talked to Harry(whom I've heard knows his stuff) and he said that they change the lifters in frame very often. He sent me the instructions and said that they use a rubber plunger to hold the lifter to the string as they pull it into place with a half moon pipe under it to prevent it from falling into oil pan. Has anybody here ever done this and if so what did you use for the rubber plunger? Also what size is the cam jornal aprox. so I know what size pipe to buy? This has me a little baffled
.Thank you in advance,
Ben
I am one of the few, the proud, who have changed tappets in the engine while in the truck.
Its about a 2" pipe if I remember right. You can use like aluminum conduit or pvc.
You can use rubber or a cork and cut it to size. Run the string through the cork and use a couple small washers with a knot at the bottom to keep the stopper from falling off of the nylon string.

I've done a few too...
Yes I think the pipe was 2", cut in half so you have your 1/2 moon tray. But be careful not to gouge your front cam bearing.
I cut a small piece of (I think 5/16, maybe 1/4) rubber trans hose, and tied and superglued my string to it. I jam the hose into the end of the lifter and use my string to draw the lifter back ito the block. I use a straightened clothes hanger to help wiggle and guide them in (I also use the clothes hanger to pull the old lifters out).
