changing fuel filter 12v

I was wondering if anyone has posted how to change the fuel filter on a 1997 12v. I have changed one on a 3rd generation before. Is it pretty much the same?? I tried searching but it came back with an error.

I have a 98 12v and changing the fuel filter is the same as on my old 04.5 3rd gen. If your 97 has the black fuel filter housing mounted on the driver side next to the motor inside the engine compartment it should be the same.
Only difference is the lower "bowl" comes off, and the "cap" stays stationary. Just drain out all the fuel then loosen the nut on top/center to release the lower bowl portion.
And when your finished, you will need to pump the manual prime button several times (30-40 times) to get fuel back into the canister. Its located below the filter housing on the engine block. You should be able to hear it gurgle when its full. I use a broom handle to pump mine. Hope this helps.

The lower part is keyed to the upper part, ( tab and slot ) make SURE you have it engaged and you should be able to run the nut till threads are showing before placing a wrench on it.

VERY easy to get it wrong, use the wrench to pull it in, and crack the housing...........

I did exactly that the first time I changed mine. Make sure you take a good look at it.

Instead of pumping the primer, you can disconnect the shut off solenoid harness, and just crank the engine over. Once its full, reconnect the harness and fire the truck up.

Please, pardon my ignorance, but where might one find this solenoid harness connection that is to be disconnected?

The shutoff solenoid is the cylinder that bolts to the pump by the AFC. There is a harness that comes out and has a large 3 wire plug. Thats the one you disconnect.

If you pump the primer, be sure to loosen the bleed screw in the banjo bolt. I wonder if this is a good idea if you crank the engine instead? Bleed the air before it enters the injection pump.
