Cat converters

What is the general consensus on converter life? Was there such a thing as 49 state models? I got my 95 4x4 5 spd out of state and was told if it didnt say Calif emissions equipted Id be screwed on registering it here. I dont think it was ever in cali or sold here but it does have a converter and the pump tag says "cali ok". I honestly cant read the rest regarding pump HP or ID#. ive read there were 180 to 210 HP versions? Also the seller told me of a single digit on the vin that told if it was made in USA or Mexico, would that be the whole truck or just the engine or? any info on this would be appricated.

80k is a good rough number for the cat plugging. Short trips will plug it sooner, fully warmed up longer. 49 state models didn't start till '96 with addition of an EGR valve for Calif.
The first number in the VIN is where the entire truck was put together
1= US
2= Canada
3= Mexico
All '95s are legal in 50 states. Most inspections don't look for a cat. If they do look and the cat is not there they will tell you to come back when one is, there will be no penalty

It doesn't matter what state your truck was manufactured for use in. CA does not requre smog checks for diesel engine vehicles. My truck was delivered in WA, for use in WA, but I registered it in CA after driving it home from WA.

--disclaimer--This is for vehicles with more than 7500 miles on the odometer.

No smog on diesels yet. Im sure it will be here soon enough. When they ban BBQ fluid I can see the writing on the wall.

Quite true Apache. Doesn't AZ of all places have checks on their diesel powered pickups? Perhaps it's only an opacity test, but still, if AZ has something, you'd think CA would definitely have it.

My truck has 118k on it, so I'm seriously contemplating opening up the exhaust system. Since the fueling system is all stock, I don't have guages installed, therefore I have no way of checking exhaust temps to see if any particular item on my exhaust system is plugged. I guess I could take it to my favorite exhaust shop and have them check pressures before and after the item that apparently plugs at around 80k. I don't have a welder, and I don't like clamps, so I can't really remove any pieces of the exhaust myself.
