can't change my own oil

Its time to change the oil in my truck so I go to pull the drain out and it won't budge! I broke a snap-on breakover bar tryin to get the buger out. When I get this thing out I don't want to have this problem again. I need to know what to do to fix this problem. And how the heck did this thing get so tight to begin with. I only snugged it up tight enough it wouldn't fall out.

Re:can't change my own oil

I got a impact wrench for 1/2 inch but not for 1/4. Guess I gotta confess on putin the fool thing in to tight but I shure didn't put it that tight because I had to fight it to get it off last time and didn't want it to get that tight again. The thing must get tighter over time or something cause I didn't put it very tight. When I get it off I wanna put one of them drain thingys on so all I gotta do is open a little valve and out comes the oil but I don't know where to get one at.

Before you install a quick type drain plug check with cummins the extra weight could crack the pan, Iam sure if you just torque the plug to spec's it shouldnt freeze up...Ive worked on big rigs for 30 years and have had to use a blunt punch and hammer to get some drain plugs out...just my 2 cents worth

Re:can't change my own oil

This reminds off a time when my un-mechanically inclined son, when in high school, was changing the oil on my 3/4 Ford Van. He called me at work and said, "Dad, I can't get the drain plug out. It just turned a little, and still turns but isn't coming out and oil is leaking out." ( can you guess what he did?)
I asked "were you turning it counter clockwise?"
There was a long pause on his part, probably while he was figuring out which way was clock-wise, then "Uhhhh.....no.&quot
Since then, he has figure it out and prodly proclaims "lefty-loosey, righty-tighty" like it's the secret of the universe! He's not dumb, either, but not mechanically inclined.

So, no offense, but...........?

Re:can't change my own oil

For eight years I torqued my drain plug to 60 lbs because all the books said too. Then I find out its a misprint and should be 40 lbs. I would take care to not strip or damage that plug as you can't remove the oil pan without a lot of work.
Michael

Re:can't change my own oil

The drain plug that was original factory has a tendancy to break off. If it is siezed, I would take great care on how you get it loose. Try heat, penetrating oil and impact on low power. If it does break off, pump the oil out with a hand pump. The old punch and hammer method. You will have to retap to a larger size plug. Hope I was of some help. Good luck.

Re:can't change my own oil

Suggest you first get another pan plug to have on hand. There has been plug fracturing problems when torqued on less than what you have done or will have to do. Check also for a thread repair kit for the pan. Try and be prepared for the mostly negative situation before showing the plug who is the final boss.

Re:can't change my own oil

If you can get someone to help you. Have one preson pull on the breaker bar and the other preson take a punch or chisel on the edge of the plug and wack it with a decent siezed hammer while pulling on the breaker bar and the shock should break the plug loose.

I had my truck at WallMart yesterday and they said the couldn't remove my drain plug. When I got home, I got out both the small and larger breaker bar. I hit the small bar with the hammer to be sure it was in all the way and started to pull and suprise it came off easily. ;D

Good luck
Bruce

Re:can't change my own oil

Try using a 1/2 breaker bar with a 1/2 to 3/8 adaptor. You might also tap on it some with a hammer, not enough to bend the pan.

Re:can't change my own oil

Got it done today. Done what Haulin in Dixie said to do and it worked. Had to push with feet and hold onto the center crossmember to get it loose but it come right off. Tightened to 40 ft lbs. Thanks for the suggestions.

Re:can't change my own oil

Maybe try a little teflon tape on the threads.. Might keep the plug from galling in the threads and getting stuck. I do that on my transmission and diffs, not the pan so far.

Also replace the gasket on the plug. They sometimes get a little hard and won't give enough to let the plug spin.

J-eh
