Exclamation Big decision

Ok guys, the auto tranny is on it's last leg now with 121,000 miles and it's decision time. Do I rebuild it with a killer DTT ($4400.00 installed) or is that money more well spent on a 2004.5 new ride with the 48RE? I really like my 97 12V and want to keep it. I would like to stick with the top 2 DTT and ATS (in my opinion) aftermarket trans manufactures.

Top 2? Says who? My trans is every bit as good as these two and it was about $1400 less......

I strongly suggest that you take the time to call ALL the BIG 4 tranny rebuilders and see what they all say. I am really happy with my choice of tranny. It was "the best bang for MY buck'. As cowhand said, there is a price difference.

Call Dave Goerend. I would imagine you could get his trans with the triple disc converter shipped to your local terminal and installed by your local trans shop, and still be several hundred $$ ahead.

Since it ships by truck, he might even be able to ship it to your installer for roughly the same price.

Do both!

I have a 97 RAM 12V that I love and I just picked up my 2004 HO automatic yestarday.

There is a big differance but I still love my 12 Valve! It goes to the shop on the 21st for a Cam Plate, 3K Gov springs, valve adj, and timing adj. I need to make it as strong as the new one (can't have the wife's truck being stronger than mine )

So... do both!

Cheers,
RH

Keep the 97 forget the 04, I would love to have found another 12 valve before I bought my 01 , but a good one is like gold hard to find.

I got another quote today from a highly recommended shop in Stockton (two hours south of here). They do ATS transmissions. In talking to Lewis, who is very knowledgable we determined from my symptons that I might consider a Tripleloc converter and valve body. My symptons arn't that bad, it's just I know the transmission is the weakest link in the drivetrain and it's been in the shop for a couple of things. (Like solenoids....$500.00 w/ installation and band adjustments)Anyway the quote was approx $2800.00. and we talked about adding a lockout commander box at a later time. I think that was $400.00. I can envision myself driving this CTD for at least another 100,000 miles if this all goes well.

Thanks for all the posts/input on this subject, I really appreciate it!

Personally I would do the complete tranny. There are a lot of upgrades that can be done to your tranny to make it live a very long life. What is important is to match the tranny upgrades to your expected use and HP.

I too would recommend speaking directly with each manufacter, then try and drive a truck similiar in HP to yours equipped with each vendors tranny. Then you make the decision.
