Bad fuel economy
Bad fuel economy
I've been getting approximately 12mpg in town lately (unloaded). I just adjusted the valves to no avail. I have a new fuel filter, but due to the weather I have not had a chance to install it. I kind of have my doubts that this is the issue, as the truck doesn't seem to be lacking power at all (it should lose power before it should lose fuel economy, right?). If replacing the fuel filter does not solve my issue, where should I look next?
Start with the filters. Both the fuel and pre-heater (easy to over look). http://www.dodgeram.org/tech/dsl/fil...filt_clean.htm
If that doesn't do it check the fuel pressure and over-flow valve. http://dodgeram.info/tsb/1996/14-07-96.htm
If that doesn't do it then think about bacteria in the fuel. I've had the same problem and am running the same fixes except I know the overflow valve and fuel pressure are good.
You may have to run a couple of tanks with a biocide additive to fix the problem then replace the fuel filter again.
Let me know how yours comes out. Good luck. Hope this gives you a place to start.

I get 12 too when I drive it to keep up with traffic from stops. Otherwise, usually about 14-14.5 if I accelerate slower. I think it's normal. I feel like I started getting 14 in town when I went back to stock tires from 265's. What kills the mpg is the factory torque converter.
My mileage dropped after I did the injectors so I thought it was that, but it has definately gotten worse even though it feels like it still has decent power.
Look at above causes and let us know.

Well, I changed the filter yesterday. I've put almost 17K on the truck, and who knows when it was changed prior to that (yes, I realize that it should be changed every 12k). There was a decent amount of junk in there. I took it for a drive afterward and it felt exactly the same as it did before. We'll see if my mileage improves.

Check with local truck stops/service centers for biocide. Not sure of any specific name brands, sorry.
