Axle U-joints

How big a pain are they? I'm looking at a 96 4x4 3500 that might be cheap enough if they aren't too bad too do.

just did mine it was an ugly job,the first time you do it ,think it will be easier now that I know what exactly is involved.Do a search on here to use the power steering to push the bearings out(it's the worst part)and have a 43 mm socket, and lots of never seize for the next time

It is easy once you know how to do it.

I don't know if it's driveable still waiting for a call back but the price is right if there's not a lot else wrong.

Break hub nut loose.

Jack up the side of the axle you're working on to drain the fluid to the other side (otherwise you may think your axle seal is leaking later).

Take off the wheel and move the caliper out of the way.

Loose hub nut, but leave it on.

P/S press bearing off (see infidel's picture).

Remove bearing. Support axle shaft.

Remove axle shaft & stub shaft.

Change ujoint & clean shaft.

Lubricate axle shaft.

Slide it in, be careful to not rest it on the seal or get dirt past the seal. The seal is quite a ways into the axle and a majour PITA to replace.

Lube/anti-seize stub shaft, anti-seize where the bearing mounts after cleaning it up.

Reinstall bearing, hub nut, caliper, wheel. Torque everything down.

Other side.
