I have never used a 3rd gen axle on a 2nd gen, but I could see, leaf spring perch distances apart, leaf spring widths, rear driveshaft U joint and maybe even driveshaft length being different / a problem.
I would recommend checking them both out with a tape measure, checking u-joint #s, and such would be the way to proceed.
You have the 17 inch rims already. so that will not be an issue.
