Automatic Transmission Question

Like I posted before, I am looking at Dodge Diesels to upgrade the truck I tow my boat with. I have a silly question about something different I noticed in the automatic transmission truck that I drove the other day. When you let your foot off the throttle, the engine RPMS go down to idle, just like it would do if it was a manual and I put my foot on the clutch. My gas powered truck doesn't do this, it keeps turning at whatever RPM the engine was turning, is that how they all do or is something wrong with this transmission? I hope I explained this correctly...

That is what it is supposed to do. The t.c. unlocks and the tach goes to idle.

it's normal with the Dodge autos. Loose torque converter, coupled with the TC unlocking when you're off the throttle, means it drops to idle.

Thanks guys for the quick response. I think I am buying this truck so I am sure I will have lots of more questions.
