Auto Trans woes
Auto Trans woes
After searching, I still cant find the answers I am looking for. Im not idiot when it comes to trucks, diesels are quite new to me even with the stuff Id read up on. But a dodge tranny is a dodge tranny. Im a much bigger fan of a manual any day. To me a stage six clutch and having someone install it, roughly 2 grand is what my buddy is paying for his 24v is hella cheap than a 5grand racing tranny. I work construction, make 10 an hour, my cash is limited. I do plan on modifying my truck. I am trying to look at a 95 saterday.
If I plan on running roughly 400 hp how long till I have to put a new tranny in it?
Is every tranny that holds that kind of power or more going to run me 5k?
Even being easy on it, which I am not a speed demon but everyone messes around will I still have to drop a new tranny in it within a few months?
Are there things I can do that will postpone the blowing up of my trans? (ie, bigger tranny cooler, strange kits?, little stuff?)
Thanks in advance

Yes you drive alot different than I do on a daily basis... I enjoy gas millage. My foot stays out of the majority of the time. Hmm. Well I guess if I find one cheap enough a built tranny would have to be on the list... F.
And thats the difference between us..haha I have two speeds: Idle, and on the floor. Like I told you before if you want to go fast and have plans on racing, Get an auto. If you want to tow..Get a manual. There are some fast shifting manual guys out there but still not as fast as a built auto. Its expensive but will be worh it.

Thought I'd revive a week old thread..
I was at a B-day party with my son 2 weeks ago and questioned another guy there with his 3yo daughter about his "freedom Diesel" hoodie that he was wearing. Apparantly he knows those guys and coincidentaly he happens to be the heavy line tranny tech at a dodge dealer in Socal. So I made friends in a quick way with him (apparantly our wives go back about 10 years).
SO now on to my problems...
I've got a 96'CTD 4x4 auto w/banks galore that the old man I bought the truck from had installed. Thought everything was fine, things seamed a little slugish. Did a GSK, things were still crappy. adjusted the fuel plate... no change... star wheel.. no change. soon discovered that it took RPM's to build boost. 25psi at 2500rpms... did some searching and found that the while the fuel plate was adjusted correctly and stuff, the lever was diving under it. So I adjusted it...
...
HOLY F'ing GAWD!!!!
Now it builds 34psi by about 2k... Rocket ship!
Tranny held up fine but the TC wasn't. So I did a Mystery switch. and for some strange reason the switch mod seamed to hold the TCC tighter so that truck really unleashed hell. But it still slipped. progressivly things got worse so I dropped the pan and changed the fluid. yup metal shavings on the magnet.
So using my wholesale connections (I have my own business as an axle builder) I ordered up a Diesel converter from a local tranny parts house. Its a PDQ Billet cover extra low stall converter. cost me under $500 with the core. I was gonna just do the TC and a VB. But the tranny got worse. started gettting hot and having problems upshifting from second to 3rd and sometimes into 2nd even. then when it gets into 3rd I give it more throttle and it jumps down to second again. Sometimes it runs flawlesly save for the slipping TCC.
So talking to this tranny guy I've found. He is using my pdq TC and he had me order up a new VB from suncoast. He prefers the new unit with new electronics vs rebuilding. Yes its worth it.
I'm dropping the truck off tomorrow night with him and picking it up on saturday. $1000 for the R&R, rebuild with my VB and TC and it should have no problem holding up to my power.
Sometimes you can find tranny builders that do side work to make some pocket $$$.

A stick is only rated 400-500 ft. lbs. torque and the stock auto is 450 ft lbs. You can't do much to build up a stick but the sky is the limit with an auto!
Seems like most sticks come out before 100k and autos are getting closer to 150k. If you're towing over 10k get the stick and take it easy, if not towing much or heavy the auto would be a better choice.
Well depending on your power goals and your intended use you can get the parts to lightly build your trans for less than the cost of a higher end triple disc converter. With a decent single, a Trans-Go, and a fresh rebuild with a few simple updated parts would set you for medium towing (up to 20k Gross), the occasional sled pull, and random street fun up to 400hp.
PM me for more information and advice if you would like.

Just buy Goerend's basic built tranny with a triple disc, and you will be good to go as long as you dont build a lot of boost leaving the line. As long as you didnt break a shaft, it will hold a lot of power. Actually, if you can be happy with 400hp, Daves single will take about $600 off the cost, and should be fine at 400hp. Its I think $3200 for Daves triple disc tranny. So about $600 off of that for his single disc and built tranny with stock shafts, and a 100k mile warranty.
