Auto trans starts in second gear after stop

HELP I just purchased a 1996 Dodge SLT 2500 LB with auto trans. When I drove it home I noticed that after coming to a stop then taking off again it sounded like it was kind of stalling while actually I found that the transmission did not downshift to first gear but was still in second gear. I have notice it does not always do this but most off the time it does. If I come to a stop and turn the engine off and start it again it will start of in first and shifts normal again. Any ideas or experience with this please let me know.

Has the tranny been replaced or worked on? Your PCM needs to be flashed. Call your local dealers and they can tell you how much they will charge for performing the TSB.

A common cause is the gov pressure sensor and solenoid on the VB. About $150, do it yourself.

I am new to this how?

How do I check codes and if it is the sensor how do I get information on doing that? Is there a good manual or reference place on how to? I am pretty sure I can handle doing it but need a good reference. Thanks

Is the difference here one being "RH" hydraulically controlled versus "RE" electronically?

Yes you are correct.
The RH has a 3 pin plug in with the pins all being in a row or straight line.
On the RE tranny the plug in is a round multi pin connector.
The plug in is located on the top of the valve body area behind the shifter and throttle pressure levers.

The first test i would make for your lack of downshift problem would be to hook up a gauge to the governor test port and check the pressure to see if it drops off when you come to a stop if it is not falling to less than 2lbs it will not allow it to downshift.
