Anyone used a Banks torque converter?

If it's under a hundred bucks then it might be worth going for....though frankly the amount of effort needed to take the trans out and replace would keep me from wasting time and money
putting anything but the best in there the first time

Of course every vendor says THEIRS is the best, and every forum has THEIR favorite. Hence my question: Do YOU have EXPERIENCE with a Banks converter?

Gary:

Hey buddy, hope you are doing well.

Gary, I would NOT recommend the Banks Torque Converter. They are way overpriced, and are not as good as their competitors, although to hear them talk they make the best of eveything as you said!

Personally, I use all ATS Diesel Transmission Parts in both my 1996 and 2006.
But, there are alot of other companies that build very good single or triple disc converters for much less than Banks. Try looking at Dave Goerend's stuff, he is in Iowa, or Phil Taylor at "Performance Diesel Converters in Ga.
Also, I used a "Pro-Torque" Diesel Converter and it held up great. They are up in N.Y. Gary.

While I thought I was stating the OBVIOUS...I will try to make it a little clearer for you....Yes I have a couple friends that tried the Banks converter and neither run it any more. I drove the vehicles and I wasn't impressed with them either.

Like John P I too would suggest any number of other vendors when it comes to converters....Now if you want to ask about exhaust systems or Inter-coolers, I know many people that are quite happy with those particular Banks products.

Thanks; what was it about the converters that you disliked? Were they not tight enough? Did the lockup clutch chatter or slip? We're they used for regular go-to-work driving? sled pulling? drag racing? towing? "Not impressed" doesn't give me enough information to help make a decision. I had stock converters in my 89, 93, and 03, and wasn't impressed with them either. Stall speed was too high and converters weren't tight enough. Felt like driving a CVT transmission until lockup occurred. Is THAT what you're talking about?

Let me expand on "I found one I can afford." I'm rehabbing my house to sell and rehabbing another one 700 miles way to move into. The trips involve steep grades and I have quite a few more trips to male hauling heavy. My TC clutch is chattering and slipping under load and I don't think it'll make another trip. My savings are kaput due to the house situation, so I'm trying to Band-Aid the tranny for 5000 more miles of heavy hauling. It's a stock 96 except for #10 plate and 4k GSK. The valve body has been modified for higher line pressure.

Gary:

I got your P.M. a little while ago.

I didn't realize you had ALREADY BOUGHT the Banks Converter.
I wish you good luck with it Gary,......as I know six guys who bought them and they didn't hold up very well. That is why I tried to recommend those other companies to you. Also, if the Banks Converter DOES happen to fail,
good luck with warranty. IMHO,...their company is not that good about standing behind their products.

I am pretty sure their converter (the one you got) is a SINGLE DISC and you could have gotten a TRIPLE DISC from those companies I listed for about what you paid for that Banks Converter.

I appreciate you were trying to help. I operated within a narrow budget that I didn't even have!
