Another 5th Gear missing but do to a broken snap ring
Help,Another 5th Gear missing but do to a broken snap ring?
Well, I just finished removing everything to get to the 5th gear. I assumed it was the lock nut problem, and since I had never been in this transmission, that was what I expected to find. But, to my surprise, the nut had been previously replaced with one that had the locking screws. The nut, gear and everything on the main shaft was in place as it was suposed to be. I found that the 5th gear syncro was loose. I guess I'm somewhat lucky as I stopped driving the truck as soon as the 5th gear problem happened and I trailered it home. So I next checked and found pieces of a broken snap ring. Everything else look OK. The springs were still basically still in place and I see no other damage.
My question is, can I just replace the snap ring? Is there something else to look for that may have happened? The snap ring seemed to have worn thin so I thing that is why it broke.
It's an NV4500 in a 95 3500 4x4, completely stock with 190,000 miles. It is used to pull a trailer weighing around 24M.
I would appreciate any help you can give me. I really don't want to pull it out too many times.
Thanks,
Bill
