AFC vs. MPG ... my results

Found that tuning the AFC makes a difference in mileage. This isn't a perfect test, but enough to show that there is a difference.

Checked my MPG with the AFC (light spring) in different positions:
Driving was ~200 miles, similar route, all city no highway.

AFC housing ff, starwheel back about 3 turns from ff.
14.3 MPG driving like grandpa
lots of smoke, very responsive

AFC housing full back, starwheel ff
15.2 MPG driving normal
almost no smoke, OK responsiveness

Going to tune for least smoke with good responsiveness and check it again.
Anyone find similar results with tuning the AFC?

I was going to add injectors, but I think I'll save the $ and just grind the #10 for some more top end while I'm screwing with it.

With the 3GSK, the #10 isn't defueling until near 3k.. I don't know you will gain much, especially with the stock turbo. You will be pulling out on the throttle from temp before you get there.

Injectors make a difference all the way through the RPM band, not the same feel as a plate.

I believe your posting on the AFC MPG mods. Upping the starwheel will keep the fueling light at cruising speeds until you press on it a little more.

I posted looking for AFC tuning info a week ago and didnt get much info
Is there any info other than that post awhile back from Baja about AFC tuning?
Im having a hard time getting a balance between lots of smoke and major lag. I have a feeling these different adjustments also may be RPM or load dependent.

AFC MODS?
I've searched and found nothing of AFC tuning, thats why I started my own testing.

What I want to do is make the arm travel further forward under low boost (to lower fueling). Then have a spring/setting that will allow fuel to come in just fast enough to have low smoke and good response. I think this should give me the best economy and reasonable driveability.

BTW. I'm not trying to build a race truck. Just a great hauler for towing the Grand National. I can only afford one turbo 6 cylinder with 800hp.

So you think grinding the plate is a waste of time? Right now it's setup to hit 1300EGT @ 32lbs WOT while towing.

I wouldn't let it get hotter than 1200 degrees sustained.

An AFC Spring kit makes tuning a little more user friendly. The AFC takes a few clicks on the starwheel instead of 1 for a little help in the boost vs fuel department. With larger delivery valves, you can dump fuel alot earlier than most and it makes tuning a little more sensitive. Getting intimate with the zero boost screw and the starwheel takes some time adjusting and running.

For me its why I like the P pumped engine, you can adjust a little at a time. You aren't stuck with the tune in the box..
