adjust timing

Hopefully soon I'm about to adjust the timing. This will be very new to me. From what I've seen, it looks like everybody has been adjusting around 16*? Is that what I should adjust it to? Also does anybody have a detailed write up on how to do this?

Thanks

Dodgeram.org has a nice write up here:

Most of the tools are common and or can be hand made. You will need to buy a delivery valve holder socket. A gauge in metric is nice, but english will work if you do the conversion from english to metric and visa versa.

An oil drain plug can be converted to a gauge holder rather easily. See my pics gallery for a few pics on how to do this. There are a number of write ups here on how to do the timing, including my original write up on using the drain plug for the holder, with some timing "how to" tips.

As far as timing, 16 is the max I would go, but it depends on you mods. You just have to be very careful in every step, and make sure of what you are doing. Wrong timing can hurt performance and blow head gaskets (extreme case) but it is possible.

YOu also need a good way to turn the engine over by hand. The alternator nut works well when turnig the engine over backwards, but tiurning forwards is a little tricky. You either need a barring tool or you can use one of the crankshaft balancer bolts. I did not like using one of the balancer bolts as it is pretty small and you really have to crank on it, but it works.

Happy searching, lots of info, KD

I made my barring tool by welding a socket to an old starter gear.
Only thing you need to buy special is the DV socket.

Wish I read about that one BEFORE I tossed out that old starter!

Any automotive electric shop has a pile of them they'll part with for free.
That's where I got mine.
