about timing

do you have to a barring tool to rotate the engine or can a person use a socket and rachet and turn the crank over

A socket on the alternator pulley nut works just fine.

Alternator nut works good for me too, but only will turn engine one way. Other way just slips.

The barring tool IS nice when you go to tighten the nut on the inj pump, though. Keeps the engine locked into position.
