97 F800 with 5.9
I have a 97 F800 with a 14' toter home box on the back. That I use for a tow vehicle for my race team. I pull a 48' goose neck. The truck has a 5.9 cummins. It appears to be like my 12 valve 94 2500 ram. I moved the plate full forward and ran the star wheel out. The truck also has a allison auto, in it. I guess I'm wondering is this the same engine? and will moving the plate or possibly getting a different plate hurt anything?

hmmmmmm... an allison eh? you happen to know which model allison it is?
getting a different plate will give you more power. does the pump look the same as your trucks?

I was told by someone that is supposed to know on the tranny's that it was a smaller allison, but one that has a really good history. I can tell you for sure, that plate and shut off look like my trucks, the pump looks a little different, but I'm no way an expert and they could very well be the same pump??

Yep its the same basic engine, some miner things like belts, hoses, filters ,ect will be different. Cut the plate to a #100, do the afc...I would say the pump is a 180.......however it may be a jacked 215 rated at 230 horse, look on the timing cover. Be sure to install a pyro and trans temp guage. The trans should be bulletproof........if you keep it cool, if you can find transynd fluid its well worth the money and keep an eye on the cloth covered trans cooler lines they like to get hard and crack

most likely an allison at545 like they use in the school buses that have the 5.9's
i wouldnt say the tranny is bullet proff as its only designed to handle the power being put through it, suncoast does offer an aftermarket torque converter for the 545 not sure what else they have.
i believe the tranny is full mechanical

The truck takes off great...but man it falls from 68MPH to 60 in a heart beat and all the way to 40 pulling some Tn. mountains..Any suggestions...Like I said I slid the stock plate full forward (but I've not ran the truck since sliding the plate, might be enough?). Not sure on the AFC housing deal, I've never noticed that it could be slid, will have to check that out. I would like to know where a person could get a #100 plate, I looked a Piers and TST web sites and can't find them?
Oh it says its a 190 on the plate on the timing cover

pretty sure a 100 isn't availible through any companies. a 10 should do well for your towing application though. i believe there might be a couple members on here that sell the 100s?? maybe someone who knows more will chime in...

just watch your egts in a heavy truck like that under load all the time especially since it seems like your gonna be mainly pulling with it.
saw a 5.9 in a f800 propane delivery truck the other day at a buddies shop, it too was the 190hp one. they were fixing the wiring for the block heater, and had recently done a headgasket and new turbo in it, friend that owns that shop said its not the easiest to work on as he's used to much bigger trucks, but it sure looked easier to access all of the motor compared to my 98 12v.
also tranny temp guage if you dont have one would be a good idea

Actually Mainer, this was a Pepsi delievery truck. They dropped a pallet of cola's on the cab and crushed it. The builder of the toter Home part stole the truck for next to nothing with only like 20k on it. Like ($2,000) he put a new cab and then built the 14's box and put a western hauler type bed, has a ton of storage belly boxes. I pull a 48' T&E gooseneck enclosed trailer. I race Dirt Latemodels in about a 3 to 4 hour radius from Birmingham, Alabama. I love the trailer. I just have that kind of truck, because its cheaper than a new dually and has air brakes, and my sweet little wife has her own toilet at the race track, which makes her happy. And you know if momma is happy were all happy *GRIN*
Thanks for the advice and if anyone can put me on a plate for this truck, I would be very thankfull
Merry Christmas and Happy New Years!!!

Watch what you do in that particular application, 1st thing to consider is weight. an F-700 pulling a well loaded 48' GN trailer isnt gonna run leaps and bounds up the TN hills. Thats a small engine for that much weight all the time. So when you crank more to her, your gonna get much hotter than the same guy who has done so in a pickup truck. Its not common to slow to 60 mph with better than 26-27k load on, even on slight longer hills...steep ones I can see 40. These are good engines, but they start slowing when you put large amounts of weight behind them.
Before adding anymore, get a Pyrometer. Also I have heard from many OTR 5.9 users that the more you add to her, the less she will have in the long run. If you plan to clock higher miles on it, its just gonna get more expensive the more fuel you add to her.
The f-700's are about the largest truck with that engine standard, yep it was an option. So getting much better than what your getting speed wise will require you to buy a bigger engine, or truck.

This is a F800..But, is just doing little mods like slidding the plate full forward or maybe adding a #100 plate a big deal? I'm not trying to mod the truck so its going to run 65MPH all the way up the hills, but doing a few mods over the stock configuration so she doesn't fall 8MPH with just the slightest of grades, is that bad? I have no intentions of doing no more than a plate or if thats bad jsut sliding the stock plate. Pyro is ordered as is a Trans. Temp. gauge. I really don't want to hurt the truck, but its only runs about 400 mile tops round trip on the weekends. Which is maybe 5,000 miles a year (our race season)
Sir, I'm really not arguing, just wondering if maybe you have mis-understood the amount of mods I plan to do. If the stock plate full forward and or the #100 plate forward is bad idea, please let me know. But that is where the mods will stop. And I'm really not realistic in what I'm expecting from this type of engine. I know uning 75MPH up or down hills is out of the question. But run 70mph and falling to 40 in this truck as opposed running 70mph all the way up the hill with a 05 dually(with 24 valve) in 6th gear same trailer, that can't be that bad of a grade, can it?
