97 dually

I just purchased a 97 3500 4x4 diesel dually. The truck had just had the tranny rebuilt it has 180k miles on it. The truck runs great when it is above 10-15 mph it has lots of power from there to when you let out pulling or not. But with a trailer behind it the truck will barely get moving. It has no low end power at all but its fine when it gets to 10-15mph. The truck does have a little black smoke when it idles for a while. But is this the power these trucks have or do i have somthing wrong or am i just use to power since i have a 05 duramax and a 99 powerstroke? ANy thoughts or power tips are welcome since im new to dodge and would like to make this work truck able to work.

I have read about some tq plates, adjusting something called a star wheel and then adjusting somthing else but not sure what to do for my best low end power results. This truck pulls a 20' dump trailer around the farm all day in the grass and it is tough to get it going need that low end oomph

Something ain't right. Mine pulls fine low and high. I'm not enough of an expert to say what it is for sure, but it may be injector pump timing. I know mine has to have slipped, and it does kill some of the low end when it does.

Check the air filter. Get rid of the cat and get a straight thru muffler, or straight pipe it, if it isn't already.

If it is a California truck, the EGR may be part of the problem.

Yeah, back it waaaay off and you will develope more power at low end. At that speed the turbo is not up and thus the pump won't give it any fuel.. a no win situation. You have to have fuel to build boost and you have to have boost to get fuel. Anyway back off the star wheel should do it.
