97 auto with no reverse, should I buy it?
A friend wants to sell my his 1997 4WD auto. Says it has no reverse. 165k miles.
What is the likely diagnosis, and how much $$$$ should I expect to pay for repair.
I could remove & install myself, but if it needs rebuilt I would have a trans shop do that.
Im just trying to decide if its worth the trouble or what to offer.

The question is, is it the transmission or is it the electronics. The price of an overhaul varies a lot depending on what it needs vs what you want. Here in AK, $1700 to $5,000. At 165K, probably the transmission.
