96 wont start

96 wont start
My 1996 12 valve is acting up. Two totally different questions here and I will ask the most important one first.
A couple of weeks ago, i was trying to start the truck and it would crank over fast but would not start. After 3 or 4 tries, it started right up. A few days went by and it done it again. Same deal, try it a few times and it will start.
Last night when i was leaving the race track, it would not start and it took 15 or so tries to get it going. I can tell when its not going to start cause the pedal is hard to push telling me the fuel solinoid is not working. Ive been pushing the pedal a little cause it tells me if im wasting my time on that crank.
I replaced the solinoind a few years ago and the relay too. I replaced the relay again and its still doing it. One thing im wondering about is the wiring in the steering column or key switch???
Second problem.....im getting a ticking noise from the engine now and again. It may run all day and never tick or it might tick as soon as you start it. The engine seems smooth while ticking and i think it goes away when you give it fuel. this is a fairly loud tick.
Poor thing has got 320k on it....i hate to give up on it now.

mine did that when the return line was leaking. its very hard to see and even tougher to change out, unless your the human pretzle.
and the ticking is probably the lift pump
