I am new to this 2nd gen motor and have a few questions. This motor is in a motorhome and the book calls it a cummins 190. It has the p-7100 pump. First of all this has 2 fuel filters on it, FS 1251 and FS 1242. Why does it have 2 fuel filters and can i use the same plastic bottom part off the old larger filter? Do both filters have to be drained of water now and then? Also, how do you change the high rpm limit on this pump to get a little more rpm,s ? It seems to be at the gov at 2400 rpm and with the allison 4-speed non-lockup 70 miles per hour is all she can do. Also, can a person get a few more free hp out of this pump with simple adj ? I want just a little more power so i don.t have to install gages. Does the motor used in these motor homes have 60 # springs installed since it has an exhaust brake on it and how do you tell? Thank-you. Rod
More filtering is better [ in case you stop somewhere that has a bad batch of fuel ] , the plastic part on the bottom , should be a water separator , if you live where it gets below freezing , you should put a non water separating fuel filter in [ so that you do not have standing water to freeze ] , then put the water separator filter back in for warm weather .
looking at the plastic bowl for water , and drain as needed .
The RPM question , there is a set / sets of springs , governor springs - 3,000 & 4,000 RPM , that go into the fuel pump to fuel the motor to higher limits .
There are a number of adjustments to get more HP / performance , set timing to about 16* , move or replace fuel plate , turn fuel star wheel .
But , you should have gages to keep an eye on what is happening .
If the exhaust brake was factory installed then it should have heaver springs , but that is an assumption .
Are you going to keep the HM & motor as a unit ?

FS 1251 and FS 1242. Why does it have 2 fuel filters -One is a water separator and the other is a particulate filter.
and can i use the same plastic bottom part off the old larger filter? Yes
Do both filters have to be drained of water now and then?- No only the one with the plastic bottom.. You should replace both of them annually.
Also, how do you change the high rpm limit on this pump to get a little more rpm,s ? It seems to be at the gov at 2400 rpm and with the allison 4-speed non-lockup 70 miles per hour is all she can do. install a 3GSK kit. It works good on my motorhome. Winding up to 27-2800 rpm makes a lot of difference. Altho your motor winds to 2400- it starts defueling sooner and with a 3GSK it will full fuel up and past 3000 rpm.
Also, can a person get a few more free hp out of this pump with simple adj ?Yes-- but Buy and install a pyrometer and boost gages if you don't have them before you do anything I want just a little more power so i don.t have to install gages. Does the motor used in these motor homes have 60 # springs installed since it has an exhaust brake on it and ho Probably not.

John, yes i am keeping the motor in the mh because it is in good shape and only has 50,000 miles on it. What # fleetgaurd fuel filter should i put on for winter so it don,t freeze? Skip--Does the 3000 rpm kit go in the p-7100 pump fairly easy? On my 92 i just moved my hi-idle screw out to get about 200 more rpm,and this also seemed to extend the defuel point a little.
Skip--What rpm,s does your 96 mh with 6-sp run at 55 and 70 mph? My 96 with 4-sp allison runs 2000 rpm at 55 and on the gov at 2400 or 2500 at 70 on level ground. Going up hill my rpm,s are at gov at any speed. Who can i talk to about a BD convertor?
You might want to check out changing the gear ratio , either diff. gears , or ???
Are you going to tow with the MH ?
How heavy ?
Trade offs , getting the RPMs down , and having enough power [ through eng. or gears ] to do what you want .

Skip--What rpm,s does your 96 mh with 6-sp run at 55 1450 rpm and 70 mph 1900 rpm at 65 mph? My 96 with 4-sp allison runs 2000 rpm at 55 and on the gov at 2400 or 2500 at 70 on level ground the 6 speed has a double overdrive. Going up hill my rpm,s are at gov at any speed. Who can i talk to about a BD convertor http://www.dieselperformance.com/?By chance- did the original owner install the exhaust brake?

The exhaust brake was put on by the first owner. It doesn,t feel like its working. I don,t know what kind it is for sure but part of it says retarter on it. If i have a diesel shop check the valve clearance will they be able to tell if i have 60# valve springs? Rod
