'95 quit, felt like it was out of fuel??

I took my '95 dually yesterday to go pick up another truck; I had an empty trailer hooked on. I gave it a stomp once & it usually blows some black smoke, but this time it was a lot whiter...kind of a blue-ish color ??
Everything else was fine, no power loss, etc.
I loaded up the other truck, drove it home & parked it for about an hour.
I went back out to move the truck, it started up as usual. When I went to reach for the shifter to put it in reverse, it just died.
I tried starting it back up & nothing (turned, but no fire).
Tried it again while pumping it a few times...it ran for a second but then died again.
After pumping the crap out of the gas pedal again, it finally started & I kept it at about 1500 RPM's for a minute, then let it idle back down & it was fine.
I let it run a few more minutes, then moved it, shut it off, & started it back up...ran fine.
About a half hour later I went out & started it again, still fine.
I'd kind of hate for this to happen again when I'm on the road someplace...
The engine feels as strong as it always has been...
Any ideas..?

First thought is that the fuel system is sucking air somewhere. Check the rubber fuel return hose at the rear of the engine where it runs from the injection pump over the bell housing to the frame rail. They are known to get cracked and weathered, and start letting air enter the system.

My truck started acting fuel starved until I changed the fuel filter. You prolly did that, but if not, try it.

I'll have a look at that line; the fuel filter I changed back in September (about 10k ago).
thanks!

Maybe the timing slipped? I think I remember reading it would have the same effects you are describing.

I drove it around all day today, put maybe 50 miles on it & it was fine.
When I was pulling the trailer home I had a '85 1 ton 4x4 crewcab loaded backwards on it (kinda heavy) & I had to go all backroads & 25mph all the way home (15-18 miles). I thought maybe it just kind of loaded up on itself, or??
