'95 Power Steering Pump

Has anyone changed out their power steering pump? I have a '95, 2-WD, 2500 and either a hose is leaking right up near the pump or the P.S. pump is leaking--I can't quite tell which. 400,000 miles on the truck. The P.S. pump is original, but I had a new RedHead steering box put in two years ago. I'm thinking about R&R'ing the pump myself if it's not too much trouble.

I would pressure wash things off and find the cause of the leak first. Then you can determine what needs to be repaired. Replacing the power steering pump is not a difficult task.

My 96 turned out to be the pump housing. There was a huge pain in the butt issue with my year and, I think, 95 having two different pumps that overlapped in production and it cost us several days of waiting to get the right part the second time.

While it was off, we replaced the vacuum pump behind it. My mechanic was amazed at how worn out it was, so I'm glad I did.

I did check at the auto parts store on prices, and when I'd told them I had a '95 they asked me if it had a hydroboost. Mine doesn't. So maybe that is the two-different pumps you experienced Mac702.

Yikes. I just checked NAPA online, and they are asking $316 for a rebuilt vacuum pump.

Ebay has a Dorman vacuum pump for $190 with free shipping. Also I see new fiber vanes to rebuild the vacuum pump for $24.

There are about 100 pumps on ebay that say they will fit a '95 Dodge Cummins 2500 (as well as some other Dodge Rams). But all are either Cardone or Dorman. But here's the thing--the Dorman's ALL look different than the Cardone pumps. The Dormans are shorter, if that makes sense, while the Cardones are longer.

Take a look:

And here's the Cardone:

That's just two different vintages, one is the 2 piece design, and the other is the 3 piece, not sure what year they did the switch over, 2001 sounds right? Anyway, all fit.

Plenty o info here: GOULD GEAR & ELECTRIC INC.

OK... I pulled the P.S. pump off and put a NAPA rebuilt pump on in it's place. I did not remove the vacuum pump, cause I didn't want to take a chance on dealing with a leaking gasket after putting it back on. Took me all day to R&R the pump.

My '95 Shop Manual showed the way the high-pressure hose and the return hose bolted into the P.S. gear--the high-pressure hose was nearest the tire and the return hose was nearest the block. So when I went to install new hoses I could not get the nuts on the end of the hoses to screw down into the P.S. gear. I must have tried for 30 minutes to get the nuts to screw down into the P.S. gear. Finally I gave thought to the fact that this was a replacement P.S. gear--it's a Redhead unit, and I figured it was a later model than '95, and they must have reversed the position of the hoses. So I tried installing them opposite from the way my Shop Manual showed and they went right in. I filled the P.S. reservoir and let it sit overnight. This morning I went out and topped the reservoir off and started it up and I HAD NO P.S. Oh crap. So I backed the truck out of the driveway--with no P.S. it was a heck of a job. I wanted to put it on the street so if I needed it towed to a shop it wouldn't be too hard to load. And as I was backing into the parking place IT STARTED WORKING!!! Must have had an air bubble somewhere in the system. Anyway I drove it a bunch today, and it worked great and NO leaks.
