The fluid needs to warm up, which it is doing when he warms up the truck first. Mine does it, and I have synthetic in mine. It also will not shift into OD or lock-up until the trans fluid reaches a certain temp.

If he is using ATF+3 or 4 it is synthetic.

does he plug his block heater in? that will help tremendously since the trans fluid/coolant heat exchanger is very very close to block heater.

He can trick the computer into thinking the fluid is warmed up by unplugging the stock trans temp sensor, leaving it unplugged and jumping across the two wires to the computer with a 1000 ohm resistor.
I've been assured by two diesel tranny experts that this will have no ill effects on the tranny.
My trans has been set up this way for 15 years.
If he's going to be towing or hauling heavy he should invest in an aftermarket tranny temp gauge though.
