5 speed or 6 speed
5 speed or 6 speed
Have a 1995 auto 12v w/ 3.54 gears. Switching from auto to manual. Should I use 5speed or 6 speed? I have found both and can pick the one I want. Is one better than the other?
Well my understanding has always been that the only difference gearwise is where the 5 speed has a large ratio jump between 3rd and fourth, the extra gear gear in the six speed remedies that; and 1st and overdrive are pretty close numerically. If I had a choice between the two and was having to do a swap anyway I would go for the 6 speed since you will probably have to change driveline lengths anyway. One thing that bugs me about the 6 peed though is the non-traditional shift pattern that is really close. The first time I drove a 5600 I couldnt shift right to save my life as I'm used to an NV4500, or a ZF6 which are a looser pattern IMO. Hope some of this helps.
Thanks. It may end up depending on which deal is the best then. The 5 speed I get everything I need to do the swap plus they take my tranny and transfer case in on trade to make it cheaper (around $2200.00 w' my old stuff). The six speed is $3000.00 and I have to take it out. It came out of a burnt truck and needs the gear shifter, boot, and fluid resevoir.
