4x4 Transmission Output Spline Size
4x4 Transmission Output Spline Size
Well I received some free shafts from Goerend Bros. that they pulled out during trans rebuilds to use for an adapter shaft for my Spicer conversion. I am a bit confused though, since the shafts I received are all 1 1/4" in diameter at the spines that enter the transfer case. I found on a couple sites that the diesel 4x4 shafts should be 1 1/2". Does anyone have a 4x4 transmission out of a truck that they could measure the output shaft of?

Just an update. I checked the shafts tonight, and they are only 23 splines, and the same size as 1/2 ton trucks and Dakotas. I verified this by fitting the shafts to a Jeep Wrangler np231 transfer case I have, and tghey fit perfectly. Common sense tells me our diesels use larger shafts, but I e-mailed Goerend Bros. to see if they may have sent the wrong shafts, and the reply said that all of the shafts i got came from diesel transmissions, a 47rh and a 47re.
So if anyone could possibly check on their stock diesel transmission output shaft size, I'd very much appreciate it. Otherwise I'll be pulling my t-case this weekend just to measure the shaft in my transmission.

Thanks very much! I'm very surprised at the size of the output shaft. I had an old Jeep J-20 T-18, and the output shaft was quite a bit larger than the common 1/2 ton shafts, and common Jeep 23 spline shafts. I was just confused because a couple sites, such as this one: http://dodgeram.org/tech/transmission/nv4500_spec.htm list the size as 1 1/2" with 29 splines. That page is for an NV4500, but the t-cases are the same. Thanks for the input!
