so right now we just got our home heating oil tank filled at $3.23/gal diesel is running $4.12/gal so i was looking into adding another fuel tank at the house and a transfer pump. i know im not supposed to but 4.12 is ridiculous for fuel and burning over 55 to 75 gallons a week between me and my father that a big savings close to $3,000 a year. i know during the winter i would need to at the anti gel power service but other than that is there any other difference

 

Ummm, that is what we pay for diesel up here all the time.

I have seriously thought about making bio-diesel in the summer.

 

There can be a big difference in lubricity, and the particulate content. Gel point can be higher, in some places heating oil is mixed with vegetable oils instead of with biodiesel. The cetane numbers are not subject to quality assurance in heating oils.
In a lot of places diesel fuel is dyed and sold as heating oil. There are high fines for using it in on road vehicles (which you seem to be aware of).
So IMO depending on the location and the supplier there can be severe technical consequences when using heating oil in your diesel engine. If you get a statement of conformity for your heating oil for use in stationary diesel engines like gensets it should technically be diesel conforming to the specs of on road diesel. You would still be committing tax fraud if you use it on the road, but at least your engine and injection system will not break down, keeping the sale value of your vehicle up so that it can cover a part of the fine if you get caught.

i have used it alot over the years, but there is a noticable difference in power with true furnace oil over diesel.. like was mentioned, some furnace oil is dyed diesel and it works the same as diesel obviously, my neighbor has been running only that for years now in his Dmax.. he has an extra furnace oil tank in his basement with an electric transfer pump and nozzle and only buys the dyed diesel..

i stopped running the real furnace oil after it made my cummins feel like a powerstroke while towing up hill

 

Around here heating oil is more expensive than #2 at the pump.
