Changed oil this past weekend and dumped all three gallons of new oil in the crank case. Went to dump old oil into the empty jugs for recycling and only got two of them full. Could I have burnt a whole gallon in 6k miles? Is this normal? Im curious about what effects this is having on my truck.

I drained the filter oil into the drain pan before filling the empty jugs so I got a total of two gallons. I leave the plug out until it quits dripping completely. This is the second oil change with the same results. Curious if the amount of timing I have would have something to do with it or not. The blow-by tube tends to have steady steam coming out of it.

Maybe you should check the oil in between changes? Every other fill is when I check mine.

I burn one quart every 3K miles. Well i doubt the engine burns it. It is all over my bottom end and my valve cover gaskets. That is a never ending war for me. The more i try the more leaks i get.... Oh yeah i also tighten my 10 mm timing case bolts and bottom end at least once every two months or so (or whenever i get bored, whichever comes first) U might wanna check those periodically. Go pressure wash teh engine with degreaser and look for leaks...

All of our Biege BT(A)'s have always ate a quart in the first 1K miles and stays there. A gallon is a lot to get rid of. It should be dripping off every bolt on the truck if it is going out the breather. What does the exhuast smell like? Is it more oily smelling (or some what damp) then normal (compared to other trucks, not just yours)? Have you looked at the high pressure side of the turbo? It could leak to the cold or hot side. Also fuel and oil can get together in the P-7100. Usually it makes oil, but I would imagine oil could leak into the low pressure side of the pump. Seems unlikely though.

I had a 97 Mustang that would only drop 1qt of oil with the plug removed. It was brand new and dealer was stumped.

Called in Ford and they said bump the engine with the plug out.
Sure enough here it all comes pouring out!

Leave it to Ford to come up with that.

Well there arent any large spots in the driveway and the underside isnt noticeably oily. I dont know what to think. The exhaust smell did change alot after injectors and timing but I figured that was the reason.

Maybe your vacuum pump seal is going bad. That will cause it to pump oil out the vent tube. Part is around $7 at cummins and a few hours to install. May be worth a try.

Silly but I will take a shot.

I always put 3 jugs in and have only 2 full of old oil, BUT the two that are full are right full where as the 3 new jugs of oil are not even close to the top.

Maybe the same?

that cummins motor don't leak, it just has a super efficient external lubrication system

Rattlerattle you are exactly right. The jugs I filled are to the brim. I just dont see how that equates to the three "full" jugs I dumped in. Guess Im not the only one. Its still running and hasnt given me any problems yet. Thanks for the input.

Youre using part of those 3 to fill the filter when you change as well right?


Each time Ive changed mine, 11.5-12qts in, 11.5-12 out(after dumping the filter oil in too)
I check my oil every week or two and unless im really foggin people out I dont comsume much at all....

I think this is exactly right. Look at the new jugs, there is a lot of space in the top. Could hold almost a quart. Also according to my 1997's owners manual, the injector pump can hold up to 2 quarts depending on how recently the engine was run.
