1st gen vs 2nd gen noise

Is it just me or do the 1st gen motors seem to be a little quieter than the 2nd gen P 7100 12 V's?

I think thats true?
I also think my 12v 98 is quieter than my 24v 98 was?
Does the fuel pump dictate the noise? or is it the injector?

Man I know, I have heard some second gen motors over mine and mine is somewhat loud. I know that mine is louder that my Dads 6.5 chevy diesel and I really dont know why that is but I am not complaining.I am 15 yrs old and the chicks dig my rattling old Cummins with the truckstop smell exhaust. They love it when I let it warm up because its that loud and rattling. But I have heard some 2nd gen Cummins that will make mine sound whisper quiet on a cold morning. Why I dont know

Static timing is what mostly dictates idle noise. 24v's run a lot of timing at idle, so they'll always be louder than a 12v, regardless of which gen. Given the same timing, a VE pumped engine should idle at the same 'volume' as a p-pumped engine. The common rail engines have multi injection events which, among other things, helps to quiet the inherent 'ping' sound in compression ignition engines.

I have been next to many different trucks with stock timing and my 16.5 advanced is louder than most, even stock 24 valvers, Its soo loud I thought there was something wrong with it. But i am happy with my 23 MPG average on my 70 mile commute.

Also, the injection pumps are what causes a LOT of noise under there The P-pump is quite a bit louder than the old VE...but the valvetrain clatter of the 24v takes the cake!

The coolest sounding would have to be a high timed (25*+) 12v...they just sound cool

12 valve vs. 24

The information posted on here boggles my mind. From my experiences and what I've been told, the 12 vale was quite a bit louder than the 24 valve. Now of course this was due to exhaust mods done. A buddy of mine had a 96 Dodge Cummins and it sounded like a C-130 comin down the Boulevard; much louder than any 24valve I heard! Any suggestions or input??

My buddy just picked up an 02 24v and it was by far the loudest cummins I have ever driven. One thing I could not get over is how quiet my 95 (manual trans) cummins was. I swear it was quieter than my 3rd gen (at highway speeds, but not at idle). My 97 auto cummins was louder than the 95 and now my 98 12v (manual) is even louder. I think the different hp pumps make the difference in sound. By the way all my trucks were/are 100% stock.
